rear tire oil leak

I have a IH Series 300 Utility that appears to have a leaky seal on the right rear wheel (see pic - 1956 IH 300U). The I&T international Harvester Shop manual is pretty pathetic in my opinion. It gives a very basic description of how to remove the rear wheel and a sketchy illustration of the oil seal, which I assume is the problem.

In addition, unless I missed something, I couldn’t even find in the manual what type of transmission oil to use, fill and drain plug location, or how to check transmission fluid level. I’m very disappointed with the manual to say the least.

My first inclination is just to periodically check on the oil level and maintain it at a proper level, since it appears to be a slow leak, and then fix the problem in late fall when I won’t need the tractor (hopefully, I’ll find more information, or a better manual, on how to do that by then). This would

Any suggestion or experience out there on this type of problem.

Thanks,

Paul

Some things is in the shop manual and some things is in the operators manual and some things can only be found in the parts manual and some things you just have to take it apart and look at it because manuals back then assumed a lot on the part of the person doing the repairs and if it was "common knowledge" at the time you may not find it at all...like they don't tell you how to remove a screw. The trick is to find the right place to look.

Loosen the drain plug on the diff and see if it has water in it .The water lays in the bottom and raises the oil way up, causing the seal to leak....

have never experienced that problem at all, as a person has to have some knowledge for simple stuff. never needed to find instructions to remove a wheel either, or check trans.oil level. the "shop" manuals will give you the specifications mechanics require, and are presuming you are qualified for the job. operators manuals get you familiar with the unit, and are a preventative maintenance kind of thing.

The IT manual assumes you have knowledge about repairing tractors. The Operators manual has the maintenance items in it so there is no need for the I&T and the IH repair manuals to have them. The IT manual is a good supplement to the IH manual. You need the IH Operators, Parts, and repair manuals. Binder Books dot com has everything you need.

Interesting that the differential can gather water. How do you think water would get into the differential? Do you think the filter vent under the seat is a possible entry point?
