Thinking about restoring this cub but am trying to find out what year it is for 1, and for 2, what the serial number is and if its feasible to find parts for it. on the left side of the clutch housing I have 11 11 R and underneath that 251341R2 and then closer to the controls on a plate with 3 screws its 10 26 R underneath that is is 351981R1. Can anybody steer me in the right direction?
 
Ok- so that would mean it is a '48? Are parts available for this machine, do you know? This would be my first restore, thinking about doing it for my father in law, it was his Dad's and he wants to give it to me to do but I want to insure that I can get whatever it is I may need.
 
Where's the best place to start? I mean Iam not sure how to even identify exactly what model and year this thing is. Are there documents available to identify the parts etc? It's in pretty good shape and has recently ran but I want to overhaul the entire thing.

The Farmall Cub was a very popular tractor and they were made in large numbers for many years. The collector appeal for this model is high since it is a small, light tractor that is easy to transport. Because of these facts most parts are readily available, at least compared to some other tractors of that vintage.
 
You didnt say but is the serial plate on the steering housing still there. That # will be important depending on just what parts you need.
 
Steer, ha good one. Follow the steering shaft to the front of the tractor. At the bottom of the steering shaft is, or should be the serial number tag. While Im not a member myself, there is a forum totally dedicated to the Cub. THis site has some parts, as well as TM Tractor, and one other I cant put a name with at the moment, but a google search will give you many results for parts.
 
Yup, look for a (probably used-to-be) shiny plate on the lower right front corner of the tractor, near where the steering shaft enters the front end. It may be painted over, or it may be missing.

If it is missing you will never find the actual serial number. However there will be a serial number stamped into the engine block that *should* be close, unless someone has replaced the engine block.

Casting date codes indeed indicate that it is *probably* a 1948 model, but it could be an early 1949. "11 11 R" means November 11, 1948, and IH was often a couple months ahead of production with the castings.
 
The cool thing about Cubs is that there are only two models (regular and Lo-Boy) and a few options, with most parts being the same from 1947-1979. A single parts manual covers 'em all.
 
I live in Northern West Virginia. This will be my first restore, should be a fun project. I know the front wire grill will need replaced. Maybe a ball joint here and there. Possibly a valve or two in the engine. Lots of paint. Its really not in to bad of shape and was running when he parked it a few years back. Would the IH dealer have a parts manual for it?
