farmall 350 5th gear

wont go into 5th gear. i replaced the shifter with a tighter one. it will only pull back about 1/2 way in 5th, compared to 1st and 3rd. i was told the next step is to pull the belet pully. to see what is the trouble.do i have to. remove the hydrolic resevor. to get the gear box off? just want to see what is binding/.are the gears the same as a super H/ i cant find anything for a 350.
 
5th gear on my 400 does not allow my shifter to move back as far as first or 3 either. Tractor moves just fine without any issues.

Other than fifth when in neutral the gears are completely out of mesh. When shifted to a gear the shifter slides the gear around however wide the gear is. When shifting to fifth the gear just moves far enough to lock on splines of the transmission input shaft that is part of the T/A if equipped with one. So shifter doesn't move as far to shift to fifth.
Good used 4th and 5th slider gears are getting hard to find for the transmission. Don't thing you can get new ones. 300 also works and some other tractors like 460, 504 ETC. can be used if the lower 4th gear is also changed. That would change the ground speed in 4th though.
Its a bunch of work to remove stuff to look inside the transmission on a 350, but think that's what you will need to do if fixed. If equipped you can remove some wiring, unbolt hydraulic lines, fuel tank mounting and steering shaft at front and lift off all at one time.
