Sure different today...

I haven't cut wheat for a few, maybe 16-18, years and it's sure different today, isn't it? Friend of mine retired from farming last fall after putting in his final crop and sold his equipment. His custom cutters are there now and I had the opportunity to ride along for a round on Thursday. Geez!... 35' self leveling headers, auto-steer, 1000 bu. grain carts, semis to haul to the elevator... what's the world coming to?

I used to take vacation every harvest and help him... started with 18' combines and last were 24', but it's all new now.

I'm a bit old fashioned, but I sure don't see the need for auto
steer in a combine. The good old 9500 will do me just fine. It
has enough electrical doo dads. What takes me a couple of
days would have been a week with the old Massey super 92
we had as a kid.

Tried a little wheat yesterday. Still too wet.

I do keep it old school - the backup truck is my '58 GMC. She was pushed into duty last year and ran an least 5 loads a day all harvest. Made the old girl smile to crawl onto the scales.

The advantage I could see to the auto-steer was because he was laying it out in lands, it would drive itself straight through the field. He was cutting on a 160 acre field and once he had the arrow on the line, it drove straight across. Also with a header that wide, I could see it was easier to keep it the full width of the header.
Went to Hays yesterday and there was very little cutting that far north, so it will probably be a week in NE Ks. Probably 50% on Thursday down here, but going fast. Was pretty dry here earlier, so yield is not so good... so far my friend's is running about 31-32, and it's some of the best in the area.... some as bad as 12-14 in SW Reno.
Last I helped cut was with an L2, no grain carts and 2- single axle, 16' Chevy trucks.

Guess someone around here had himself a brand new 9500 with the original autosteer- flood irrigation furrows. Stepped out on the deck to take a leak one day and hit a hole, bounced him over the rail. Think the story went that they found him chasing the combine across the field.
