farmall B won't crank?

I drove my B from my back shed to my shop. I changed out the gas tank, old tank was bad. Tractor won't crank. Checked battery with load tester & it is good 12.6 volts. Cleaned all terminals, cleaned grounds still won't crank. Took starter out of tractor put it in vise connect to battery & it turns over &spins free. Put starter back in tractor won't crank. I've changed the starter switch it will work out of the tractor but not in it. I'm not sure what else to do. Please help I'm stumped.

Just because you are reading 12.6 volts doesn't mean your battery is good. A new 12 volt, fully charged battery should read between 13-13.5 volts. With the starter in the vise and no load you do have enough voltage to turn the starter but, not enough when it is trying to turn the engine. The same goes for the starter switch, you don't have enough voltage (at 12.6) to get the job done. I'd recommend a new battery as it seems you have done everything else (cleaning connections). You might also look for any corrosion buildup (green or white looking stuff) in the ends of your battery cables too. That would indicate a high resistance not letting enough voltage through the cables. Just my thoughts.

A weak 12v batt should turn that engine over try with the crank to see if the engine will turn over. Also your Bendix just mite be bad as 12v on a 6v starter sometmes can cause problems. If the starter runs on the bench it will run in the tractor if all connections are good

That may be so if the battery is connected to a good working charging system and maybe that's what you meant??????

However a good full charged battery when setting not attached to a load or a charger would read around 12.6 to 12.7 volts depending on its state of charge and condition. It consists of six cells each of which are around 2.1 volts and 6 x 2.1 = 12.6

Hope this helps if you didn't mean when connected to a good charging system.

John T, no argument. Not knowing the age or condition of the battery or the charging system condition, I was just offering my thoughts.

Get a hydrometer and check the specific gravity of each battery cell. Should see readings in the 1.280 range on a fully charged battery. Hal

What Gene said!!!! Does the tractor even turn over with a hand crank. That is where I woudl start.
