IH 966 reverse

Hey everyone. Been cutting hay with my 966 and it randomly gets stuck in reverse. I just had all the shifters and etc rebuilt from top to bottom. It doesn't do this all the time and the linkage seems to be fine as well. The last time it did it, I moved up and down what the reverse linkeages hook to on the vertical rotating shifting shaft and it popped out of gear then with ease. Any ideas of what might be binding up? Thanks
Zeb

Whatever you moved up and down, shouldn't move up and down if you have rebuilt all the linkages.

Did you do anything with the side shift linkage in the shifter lever right up there on top where the lever is?

My 1066 will do that if you don"t hold out on the lever when coming out of reverse. If I don"t hold out, the lever releases the linkage that pulls it out of reverse before it should.

Look down in at the lever area when shifting out of reverse and you will see what I mean as you run the lever in and out of gear.

Moving the TA doesnt make any difference. I need to look at it a little closer. Right now we have been busy with the hay and I just avoid reverse as much as possible. I didn"t think the sleeve that the reverse linkage hooks too should move up and down on the other shifting shaft. I had a retired IH mechanic do all the rebuilding for me. Maybe he missed something or something came loose. I will try to look a little closer tonight if it rains. Thanks for the help

That shaft should not move up and down more than a trifle. Did you put the heavy washer on top of cover under lever. Sounds like detent roller hanging up due to shaft down too far.

I finally got some time to look into the shifting again. I was wrong about any movement in any of the linkages, etc. They all move like they should. I pulled the pin out of the adjusting rod on top of the range cover and the reverse lever is fine from there back to the handle. Now it is time to pull range cover and see what the deal is. Thanks for all the help, I will post again when I see whats going on under the range cover.

I got my buddy to work on the IH 966 again. Aparently something was hanging up with the detent rollers when in reverse. He explained it to me but I didn't get to see inside the range cover. Problem is fixed and ready to go back to the field.
