Farmall A front axle removal

Well, I hope this ain't the dumbest question ever asked... I'm pulling the front axle on a farmall a. There is an offset pivot shaft with a pin where the steering unit/gear box mounts. I can see anything that secures the pin in place, no nuts, etc. The end is very banged up like it has been hammered, not sure if the end is just peaned over? I am sure I must be missing something obvious? Thanks, Jim

If it has 2 bolts just below the pin, they go through notches in the pin and clamp it in place as well as keeping it from sliding. They have to be removed completely before the pin can be driven out.

As John said, you have to fully remove the two bolts that run perpendicular to the pin.

On top of that, the pin may be in there very tightly (hence the hammer marks you see).

To push it out - use a narrow pointed punch to drive it with a hammer - that way you're only distorting the center of the pin - not mushrooming the whole end of it.

Trust me - the more you mushroom the end, the more impossible it will be to drive out. I learned the hard way.

I had put an old socket and extension (hey, it was available...) on the pin, and tried hitting it out with that. Bad mistake. It moved a little at first, but just got stuck tighter and tighter as the pin distorted.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I attached a pic. I don.t see any bolts. But there has definitely been some custom fabrication that you can see in the pics. I have a replacement axle. I am holding off on the sledge hammer till you guys weigh in again!

oh sorry - I just caught that you were referring to an A - mine's a super a.

Not that it matters, but here's a picture so you can see the difference, and what we were talking about with the two bolts.

Mine broke on the axle where yours apparently did too, had to weld it. Common weak spot.

The one inch pin runs all the way through but is flush on either end.

Thanks JR. Now I see what bolts your referring to, which clearly aren't on my axle pin. Which makes me think....especially since it is loaded, with repair welds....that the pin might not even be proper. And makes me me think even more next step is the hammer. Since I'm replacing the axle I'm not worried about damage and the pin is already rounded over on one end....might be what's holding it in. Jim

I am parting out a couple of Farmall 'A' tractors if you need anything. I looks like you might need a lower steering housing with the axle pin mounts. I have a good one if you need it.

Thanks,
Chase
