H Water pump

I purchased a new water pump for my 1940 H and it arrived with the gland nut loose on the shaft. I'm assuming that I have to add graphite packing to this unit and then tighten the nut. Can someone tell me about this before I make an expensive mistake? The impeller drive studs were not included with the new pump so I priced them at the local Case/IH dealer. Can you believe $57.00 plus change for each one and $6.22 for each spring? Since the old ones were pretty badly worn I intend to make new ones using grade 8 bolts and 75 cent springs I found at my local hardware store. I'm not restoring the tractor, I'm using it for work. Does anyone have a reasonable objection to my stud/spring solution? Please give reasoning. I could use softer studs if necessary. (Grade 5 or less.)

I bought one from this site that had a loose gland nut also. I would make sure it is packed, tight and have a drop of loctite on it.

I think I bought some of those studs and springs from one of the normal after market parts places. I don't remember who though. They must have been a lot cheaper because I found a bag of like 6 studs and springs in my tool box I didn't know I had....

I see no problem with making your own studs out of a bolt, cut the head off and use a jam nut to tighten against the fan. You don't need grade 8, 5 or 2 will work fine. I am with you on the spring solution, why spend $6 on one when you can get them for 75 cents? It is not high tech or an extreme duty spring.

The springs have to be strong enough to maintain a
seal on the shaft to impeller when in use.(they pull
the impeller towards the radiator)

Thanks to all of you who helped me out with information. This is my first dealings with IH machinery. Past experience has been with John Deere and Massey-Harris and prior to that 23 years flying big round engined airplanes for the Navy. I still run out to look when a round engined spray plane goes over. We got everything re-assembled and put in new antifreeze and it is
sitting overnight so we can check levels tomorrow and start it. My grandson started the engine when it was dry. He didn't know it was without coolant but I'm worried about the head. It was just a short run but none would have been much better. Thanks agin to all of you. VOJ

The impeller does not do any sealing like what is common on most pumps. The springs only need to keep the impeller from moving back and rubbing on the engine block. The sealing is done by the shaft packing.

When a machine is down for service it should be disabled.

In this case the battery cable, coil wire, etc since there is no key to remove.
