hydrolic leak on lo boy cub

1964 Lo boy ,,,,Im loosing hyd fluid, and its filling up the space between the motor and transmission then it all leaks out of the case when i park it on a incline, or when it just gets to full. what is the fix for this? and does the tractor have to be split?

This sounds like an external leak. It is time for a TC rebuild. All the gaskets and seals are available through IH. There is some good instructions with photos on how to do this on the FarmallCub dot com website.

The hood/gas tank needs to come off. But the good news is no split is required.

what I have been reading its not likley the Touch control leaking. (has anyone ever heard of the TC leaking into the case?) but the transmission, (I replaced the engine seal) and the hyd pump may be leaking into the crank case.

theres a seal on the hydraulic pump you can replace just make sure the shaft isn't wore too bad if it is it wont work I think they sell something for that also

There is no opening in the torque tube to allow the touch control fluid into that housing even if the TC unit is leaking. Your fluid is coming from the transmission input shaft seal. Yes, it must be split right at the front of the transmission to fix it. If you are losing fluid out of the TC, check your engine oil, it is probably going past the seal in the pump mounted on the left side of the engine. In other words, you may have 2 separate problems.

Forgot to mention, the transmission probably is overfilled due to water/condensation in it. Only supposed to have 3 1/2 pints of oil, but I have drained well over a gallon of oil water mix out of them at times.

if the low boy is like the regular cub it has a place to check the fluid level ,on the left side of the case, its a small square headed plug just about where the rim meets the tire on the rear wheel

For hydraulic oil to be getting in the "torque tube" (that section between the engine and transmission), the hydraulic pump has to be leaking into the engine, and the rear main seal has to be leaking like a sieve.

It's time for some detective work to see what's going on:

How do you know it's hydraulic oil? Are you refilling the touch control constantly?

What seal did you replace? The rear main seal on the engine? Did you use the stock seal in the stock retainer?

The stock seal fits too loose in the stock retainer, and will leak like a sieve. So if you've got a leaky hydraulic pump too, the oil will do an "end around" through the engine and end up in the torque tube.

was able to get the stock seal to seal on the rear engine seal. (yes I know of the rear engine seal deli-ma) "torgue tube" thats the word Im looking for thank you. Im pretty convinced now its the 2 problems. hyd oil leaking into the crankcase, refilling hyd every 6 hrs or so. (Crank case always over full) and trans fluid leaking into the torque tube. Ordered the new Hyd rebuild kit today, will have to see about the trans seal next.

would this be the oil level check plug? I discounted it as it seemed to far down for proper oil level. I did drain the fluid and refill with 3.5 quarts.

Part of your problem is, the transmission capacity is 3-1/2 PINTS.

You're way over full. No wonder it's leaking like a sieve :)

I am having trouble spotting the plug in your photo, but that is the right area. Almost in line with the shifter and much lower on the side than you would expect. Very small plug.

As mkirsch stated, 3 1/2 pints, not quarts.
