Farmall 706 I. H. or German

Hello, I have been looking for an Ih 706 with the German diesel. A man has one advertised several hundred miles from me at a decent price. He says it has glow plugs and the Serial No. is 178** S-Y. According to info. I have makes it a 1964.My understanding is the German diesels were direct start. Can anyone help with this? Thanks
 
To my knowledge all 706s were direct start. The earlier ones used a 282 diesel that first was used in the 560 and 660. the later 706s used the 310 German.
 
If it has glow plugs it's not a 310 German motor. It's a D282 motor. The German 310 came out in the 706 in 1967 and then used in the 756. Yes the German diesels were direct start motors. The American D282 used glow plugs.
 
I,ve had both.The 'early' ones(63-66) had the D282.It has glow plugs and the pump is on the right side.It is 'pre cup' injection,thus the need for the glow plug.The 'late'(67) has the 'German' 310.NO glow plugs,the pump is on the left.It is a direct injection/direct start.
 
Direct injection is the word we are searching for. A pre cup engine is not considered direct injection BUT can be direct start with the aid of glow plugs. An indirect start would be like the earlier IH diesels that used a decompression mechanism to reduce compression ratio and started on gasoline. The open chamber design (there is a fancy name for it that escapes me) of Neuss engines (German) enables it to start without the aid of glow plugs or manifold heaters etc.
