IH 184 vs. 284

I have a 184 that I mow with and it does a good job. The only complaint is it is a little slow.

There are a few 284's coming up for sale and I am considering one with a 72" deck. The mowing ground speed in 3H is a few MPH faster than the 184 in 2nd and it has an extra foot on the deck width.

All else being equal, would you recommend a 284 or stick with the 184?

Thanks,

Matt

The 184 has IPTO, 284 doesn't
A faster ground speed may not do as good a job of mowing.
Bigger isn't always better. If you have flat even ground it doesn't matter, but if you have uneven ground a larger deck may bridge across low spots and scalp high spots.
Are you running your 184 at max rated RPM? The poor throttle cable design on the 184 bends and prevents obtaining full throttle RPM. It should run 2510 RPM no load.

The IH 284 tractors are Komatsu (Asian made) and are notoriously hard to find repair parts for. The 184s, while underpowered, are easy to work on, parts are plentiful, and do a good job of mowing n 2nd gear. I have both tractors and prefer using the 184.
