My 574 high speed (range transmission) quit working when removing snow with loader. Won"t allow me to shift into high speed. Reverse and low forward work fine.

The shaft feels like it is touching nothing inside. Maybe the shaft broke or something else inside.

I am guessing it requires a top down job and maybe 10 hours for a $50 part. Dealer was guessing when he agreed.Tractor is owned by a nonprofit so could do the job myself but I have better things to do.Have seen this tract split too many times but not anxious to tear into it. I figure tank, seat, metalwork, hydraulic lines, top cover and I am there. Sounds easier than it actually is I am sure. 10 hours? Once inside is it straight forward?

Sound like a simple shaft break? At least now it runs in low gear and reverse.

Are you sure the lever is not out of position? As they are now 40 years old the linkage gets worn. Ours can get scrambled and will let the lever that switches from low to high get out of place and still be able to use the low side of it.
If it moves like it is broken . Yes you will have to pull the lid. Which is as you said the fuel tank and seat will get you there. There are 3 white teflon rings, that seal the cover to the main housing, that will need replaced when you put the lid back on. It can be lifted off with 2 good stout guys. A hoist would be far easier if available. The fork is a straight forward deal after that. We have welded the shaft on ours and then just ground it down to use. Well it sounds like the shaft for the high range broke. Hard to tell from here though. If you can pull the shaft out from the trans case much, like more than normal end play it will tell you if it is broke. Like I stated in the other reply you will have to pull the top off. There is an o-ring groove for a seal on the shaft that is where they usually break. that shaft/lever is not cheap from dealer. That is why we went to welding them. We don't even have the o-ring in there anymore. It fits tight and is above the oil level. There is a nut on the other end with a spline for the fork arm to slip onto. Then tighten the nut up. We used to use lock tight on the threads. If you want to talk my number is in the other reply.
