Hood length on H

Hello all,

My 46H (X1) came with a hood from Distillate tractor (At least I'm pretty sure it is). The guy I bought from put on the "new" hood as the original hood had been "modified" to fit an alternator.

The Distillate hood measures 33 1/2", whereas the distance between the Front Grill and the Gas Tank, where the hood should properly sit, is 34 1/8" - so my hood is effectively 5/8" short.

I think that I have mistakenly assumed that (excluding minor variations) the H was the same dimensionally throughout the original production run. Guess not.

Look forward to thoughts/comments on this topic.

All that said, I need a replacement hood. Anyone have a X1 hood they would like to trade for a distillate hood, or possibly sell? If not, I'll shop around.

thanks in advance!

My 1950 "H" is number FBH-339655-X1. The hood itself measures a fore-and-aft length of 33 5/8". The distance between the grill and the gas tank, is different. I had taken everything apart a few years ago to sand-blsat and paint, and when I put it all back in place, things didn"t quite fit. Discovered the steering wheel support stand had had a big "ding" previously installed in it, so the gas tank would fit in there. Also discovered the gas tank and supporting stands would move slightly, back or forth, depending on where I wanted to bolt things down. I wound up putting a big galvanized washer under the front triangleular-suppport-stand, to it slightly tilted the steering wheel support post to the rear. It all fits just fine. Looks good. Is it "correct"? You bet.
Moral of the story = don"t worry too much about the gap between gas tank and grill. It varies.

I agree with FBH44 Adjust the tank forward and the radiator brace rearward (so the fan is evenly away from the core) and call it good, I believe they are all (intended to be) the same length. Jim

Thanks for the advice... I didnt know that I could adjust the tank location. The hood fits "ok" against the front grill/hood, but the gap is worse in the rear. There is very little play in the hood itself, because the holes for the air intake and exhaust prevent it from moving too much.

I can at least fix it for now so that the hood lines up right, and still find the right hood, without the extra hole.

thanks!

If you look at the underneath side of the X1 hood, I think you will find that same hole, but it hasn't been punched out. If you don't like the hole, it can be closed up with some sheet metal and a welder. A good body and fender guy can make it disappear completely.

agree with other posts. you just need to adjust things around to make it fit right. For what its worth, I think all the H hoods were the same in dimensions. The only difference was the hole for auxillary gas tank spout. Basically, if the hood was longer, the frame would have to be too, and I know IHC didn't do that.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I'll see what I can come up with. One thing seems certain though, the front 'nose' cannot be moved further back, as the bottom is making contact with the curved part of the frame. I think I'll have to resort to moving the Gas tank forward slightly and see if things will work better that way. That also means adjusting the air cleaner assembly, as there is barely any space between it and the tank...

thanks as always!

Hello all,

(bear with me, this may be a little lengthy of a post)

Just wanted to follow up on this topic I started a few months ago. I went to a local show this weekend and took some measurements from the vast amount of H's that were on display. Many of them have distillate hoods on non-distillate models, so I've decided to keep the hood I've got.

As noted in my original post, my hood 33 1/2" long and most of the hoods I measured Saturday measured between 1/8" and 3/8" longer... none were as short as mine. I don't know why it's shorter, but oh well.

Anyway, so I came home after the show and started trying to figure out how I could get mine to fit better and I've come to the conclusion that the rear part of the hood is positioned correctly. It fits ok in relation to the gas tank, exhaust and air intake. Not perfect, but none exists, and I'm not trying to make it a trailer queen anyway :D.

I really want to just make the hood fit better and close up the gap. Many of the previous suggestions were move the tank, or to adjust the front bolster and not worry about it. This gap is just too much for me to live with since it doesn't "look" right to me.

So, back to my issue. I've included some pictures of how it looks now. The front fit gap is the worst part.. from the front of the hood to the indentation on the grill is between 1/2" - 5/8". I want to just close it up a bit, maybe 3/8" or so... it doesn't have to be perfect. The front grill will not go back any further as it hits the radiator fill opening, which points towards the radiator...

The only good option I can see at this point (and I'm open to suggestions) is to move the radiator back so I can close the gap. There is plenty of space between the fan and the radiator so there shouldnt be issues there.

If I move the radiator back 3/8" or so, the problem you can see in the pictures is that moving the radiator means the fan shroud will hit the crankcase front cover. In that case, maybe I could trim the fan shroud ring? The flat part is about 1-3/16"?

Thanks in advance, as always!
