656 Hydraulic/Loader Problems

Hello,
We have a Bush Hog QT Loader on our Farmall 656. This past winter it quit working. You can rev the engine and it will barely raise up with no lifting power at all. I just switched over to using the Allis D17 through the winter. But now I need to work on the Farmall. Any suggestions???
If I remember right from working on them 20+ years ago, they have two pumps, but can"t remember which one feeds the powersteering and 3 point and remotes.
I figure I"ll check pumps and pressure relief valve, but is there anything else I should look for? Thanks in advance.

FIRST thing is to CHANGE the hydralic filter! it probably had water/moisture in the oil. That water causes ice crystals that can plug a filter pretty quick.A hydralic oil change may be in order.Have you ran the tractor since the weather got warm?Do that, see if it improves. Then if you are convinced that the (hitch) pump is bad,its the rear pump.

If the filter got so bad that it is starving the pump of oil, then the pump's burned up anyway and needs to be replaced.

If the oil is so contaminated that it is a gooey sludge that won't pump, then the pump's burned up anyway and needs to be replaced.

There is no scenario where the pump doesn't need to be replaced, IMHO.

Front pump feeds the steering and remotes. The rear pump runs the hitch.

Change the filter and clean the screen first.

If the hytran is a good caramel color & you have changed the filter the next item to check is mismatched hyd couplers & tips, some will not pass oil. The hyd system on the 544/656/666/686 is all from the 2 pumps in tandem in the clutch/ta center housing, no front or rear pumps on these.

Yes, just about the same system as 460/560, I think other posters were thinking about 706 & bigger/later tractors.

The 656 does have two pumps mounted piggy back. There is a difference though from the older 560 for example. On the 560 the main pump feed the aux system and the smaller piggy back pump is strictly for the power steering.

On the 656 the larger main pump first goes to flow divider for steering and balance goes to aux valves. The smaller piggy pump is for hitch but if hitch is not raising the flow from hitch pump joins the flow from other pump to go to the aux valves. Separate relief valves for each system also. So, first thing to check is relief valve for aux valves located in the rear of aux valve block. If sounds like sucking air check return hose inside rear of tractor through 3rd arm link plate.
