1948 Farmall C.
When its running it gets good oil pressure. The gage doesnt have numbers on it but the needle is about in the middle on anything other than idle. At idle it goes most of the way down.
When I work it and it gets a little hot, I can hear a tapping sound. It sounds like it may be coming from the top end somewhere. Doesnt sound like a bearing. Any ideas? After I work it, and let it sit for a minute at idle, the sound goes away.
 
Have you adjusted the valves? The C113 and C123 engines are bad to need regular attention to adjust the valves. Otherwise the oil pressure variations are rather normal.

often have low oil pressure. i go ahead and drive
mine.

is this machine new to you? or have you owned it for
some time?
 
The oil pumps on small farmalls (A B C and supers) have an end plate that gets warped, and leaks. Removing the oil pan and sanding the cover fflat on 340 grit paper on a flat glass surface helps. The gasket is way thin and in multiples sets the end clearance (.0005 to .001")
I would go there to be sure it was OK. Use 15 40 diesel oil in it, or 20W-50 and it will be fine. Jim
 
This tractor is newish to me. Got it about 4 months ago. It needed various things like brake bands, a clutch disk, and a paint job.
It hasnt run more than 15 minutes before about 1 week ago or so. IT has 3" flat head pistons in it (C-113).
The tapping sound I am refering to could easily be compared to a lifter tap from a engine that has lifters.
Jim, do you think the oil pump could be responsible for this? The oil pressure gage seems to be similar to other 113 motors I've seen or heard about.
Edit: I have adjusted the valves.
 
That engine is notorius for warped oil pump cover. yes it has a pretty strong probability of low idle oil pressure. Jim
