Engine swap question

From what I under stand lots .The back plate is different along with the frame rails I think. It would be cheaper to find an engine from an 856,1256,1456 and drop in. Or as Delta said just by a 966.

Your biggest problem is, the gas engine rails are about 1" longer, and the gas back engine plate is about 1" thinner. If you use the diesel back plate with the gas rails, it throws EVERYTHING off.

The 66 series back plate will fit on the 856 and is the same thickness as the 407's diesel back plate IIRC. Unfortunately, there is no easy solution for the FRONT engine mounting.

I think some people have used 66 series frame rails, but that presents its own set of challenges fitting the front end of the tractor, and getting things the right length so the hood will fit.

Some work but not impossible. You have several choices 66 frame rails or 856 rails with four new holes bored for the front engine timing cover block to frame rails. You have to cut that cover on each side to narrow it up to fit the width of the 856 frame width. If you use the 66 rails you will need to put shims between the front bolster and the rails. You will use the rear motor plate off the 66 tractor to the 56 rear end.If you get to the point what you want use get back on here with ?
