1959 Farmall Cub setting point gap?

My Cub still won't start, it kinda fires but just enough to make the started quit. I checked the firing order and it correct, checked the timing and that seems to be correct. i have a good spark coming out of the coil and i put in new spark plugs. Where should the engine be to check the gap on the points? i think the gap is suppose to be .020 with a coil?

The points shud be set at .020 with the rubbing block on the high point of the cam. Also check gap on plugs and make sure you have the wires in the right firing order. Closely examine the inside of the cap for carbon tracks and cracks. Replace if necessary. Also check the rotor for pitting. Cap and rotor go as a pair, just like condenser and points. Your timing might not be quite right also.

any work done recently?

Sorry to sound too basic here but- where are you counting the cylinders from? Front near the fan being number one?

has the distributor/mag been removed?

Look at the carb, is it dripping? If so, shut the gas off to it and keep trying it - could be flooded. They can be tough to start when flooded. Keep cranking it till you know it's dry before opening the gas back up.

If that's the problem it'll start at some point and you can turn the gas back on to run.

Is it distributor or magneto? The magneto has a little fiber gear in it that strips, and the rotor does not move correctly.

if you have some one dependable to pull tractor. hook up to another vehicle and pull start the cub. it will start this way when it will not any other. if it fails to start this way, seek help.

TAKE THE WIRE LOOSE FROM THE PLUS SIDE OF COIL.TAKE A JUMPER AND HOOK DIRECTLY TO PLUS SIDE OF BAT. FROM THE PLUS SIDE OF COIL. TRY AND START. IF THIS DOESNT WORK, REMOVE CAP, OPEN POINTS TO OPEN, TAKE A SCREWDRIVER AND SHORT ACROSS POINT AT GAP. SHOULD HAVE SPARK. IF NO SPARK, BAD COIL. IF SPARK, FIRE IS TO POINTS. PUT CAP BACK ON,PUT COIL WIRE IN,TAKE PLUG WIRE NO. 1,PUT SCREWDRIVER IN END OF WIRE, AND GROUND NEAR MOTOR. SHOULD HAVE BLUE SPARK JUMPAGE. MAKE SURE COMPRESSION ON NO 1 CYL IS WITH PLUG WIRE NO.1 ON CAP. SOMEONE COULD HAVE JUST WIRED AROUND ON CAP AND FOUND NO. 1. MAKE SURE IT IS WIRED CORRECTLY ON CAP TO CORRESPOND PLUG. IF THIS DOESNT WORK, CLOSE POINTS TO ABOUT 15 GAP AND PLUGS ON 13 GAP.IF YOU HAVE COMPRESSION,GAS,AND FIRE, SHOULD START EASILY.

Don't waste your time trying to pull start the tractor. It may start, but what does that prove? Are you going to wait for a friend to come over and pull start you EVERY time?

When you think you have everything correct, but it still won't start, you've got one of two problems:

1. Something is NOT correct. I don't care what you think or how many times you checked. There is something out of place, period. If a decent engine has air, fuel, and spark at the right time, it WILL start.

2. The engine as a serious internal problem either causing a loss of compression or causing the valves to operate incorrectly (i.e. stuck valve, broken cam gear, etc.)

If you can, get a compression reading on all four cylinders. Check your timing again. Make sure you're getting spark at the plugs.
