f12 oil control rings

Putting together my O14 engine (same as f12) every thing goes together fine but after the last cupala pistons go in the engine is very hard to turn over .By a series of combinations I have determined the oil control rings are causing the drag, if I leave the oil rings off the pistons the engine rolls over just fine .I"am at wits end Any thoughts?

have you checked the ring end gap?
3" pistons... you should have .012 end gap.
also how are you turning it over?... you will not turn it by hand... friction due to honed cyl's and new rings.
other than that give more info.

I"ve got new sleeves and pistons ring gap .015 seems the corrugated spacers are a bit big ,tried trimming them down a little bit with no luck so far.

Lube the cylinder walls well. You may have metal against metal.
When the engine is running the cylinder walls and the oil rings will be well lubricated. I suggest that you grease the cylinders before you insert the piston with all its rings. The grease above the piston will burn off quickly when you start the engine.

Chuck,I rebuilt my F14 years ago and my motor tightend up,to the point that the motor just felt to tight to hand crank.I was never able to hand start it which I believed there was to much drag on the motor.I installed a starter system on the tractor and every thing seems ok.Ive used the tractor some and it has good power, and never smoked

Yup, that's normal. If you double checked the ring gap, you are fine. After I put the rings on, I usually let the pistons (with rings, rods, etc. soak in a bucket of oil overnight so that they are well lubricated.

When it comes time to start the engine for the first time, I remove the spark plugs and have someone pull me around for a couple hundred feet so that the oil pump builds up pressure and lubes up everything. Once I know I have oil pressure, I put the plugs back in and try to start it. If it still to had to turnover by hand, I have someone pull start me. once it is running ok, I leave it running for a few hours until it breaks in and then head out to the fields. A good days work on a plow does wonders for seating the rings.

it is possible you may have some defect in those rings. other thing is are you installing them correctly? the wide centre ring goes first then the rail spacers next on each side. but don't know what rings you have, post a pic. of them.
