560 alternator it sat all night next morning alternator felt warm checked it today and it had drained the batteries what would cause this it has gm alternator built in volt regulator

Could be bad diodes or regulator

Incorrect wiring - so 12 volts is fed to the alternator #1 terminal with engine off - will also do it.

I got the wiring diagram off the web I'll have to look and see how I wired it I'm sure I have prob got somethn wrong I need the power to break at the key witch correct?

You need a switch or diode in the wire going to the #1 terminal. If it is not there, the regulator will be on all the time.
A light bulb from a marker light (not LED) will also work in the wire from the ign. switch to the alt #1 terminal.
