300U starter solenoid

So help me out a little here, since the return of 70 degrees has my brain addled. Another soul helped me out last fall and took the starter off the tractor so the auto electric place could rebuild it for me. He has no recollection of removing the solenoid from the exterior case of the starter and there is no hardware for putting it back on. It appears from the length of wires and bracket on solenoid that it was saddled on the starter case. There are two holes on the top of the starter...one with a broken off fastener in it and the other open. Unless I am missing something there is no way that the solenoid is going to match those holes. The holes are directly below the left steering linkage and it all conflicts six ways from Sunday. I think it is clear that I am missing something obvious, but I am not seeing how to remount the solenoid and the tractor will not turn over. Is it possible the solenoid was just hanging up under the dash? Does it need to ground thru the bracket? Is there someplace I am not seeing where this might get mounted? Any ideas would be very much appreciated. Sheesh! It is always the simple stuff that holds up the project!

Thanks Bob, but that doesn't do it for me. I have a parts book and, coincidentally, I have the Case/IH parts look up open in a different window while I research the missing parts to the 1586 cab door locks that I am working on at the same time. Sometimes those help and sometimes they don't. In this case I am not seeing it. Now if you have an actual picture of a 300u with the fool thing mounted on it I might be able to figure it out. By the time I get around to asking on the forum I have already looked at three manuals and done a Google search.

Here is mine, which was replaced several years ago:

BTW, the solenoid has to be grounded, or else it won't work.

The auto electric place probably put the starter back together with the case "clocked" wrong.

My point was the parts drawing showed the solenoid WITH the starter (rather than somewhere else on the tractor, as was your question), and listed the 2 screws needed to attach it.

You say the screw holes are on TOP of the starter, well it looks like they need yo be at 9:00.

I'd venture to guess the alignment dowel between the "belly" and the drive end of the starter is missing (or there are two holes) and the "rebuilder" assembled the stater 90º "off" with the solenoid mounting area at 12:00 instead of 9:00.

Well, with a big grin on my face and the very best of attitudes....it would be easier to know that if you said something. I got it, the solenoid goes on the starter body. I think the concept that the case is on the starter wrong is the best idea I have heard today. Looking at that now. Thanks, Bob, I wasn't beating up on you!

Well that's clear. As suggested, the case must be out of position on the starter. Occurred to me but I was not willing to go there yet. Picture MUCH appreciated!

Options on reversing the casing were 180 degrees which only made things worse but I was able to spin it down just enough to grab one bolt hole. Hopefully that is going to be enough. Thanks!
