Thanks Bob, but that doesn't do it for me. I have a parts book and, coincidentally, I have the Case/IH parts look up open in a different window while I research the missing parts to the 1586 cab door locks that I am working on at the same time. Sometimes those help and sometimes they don't. In this case I am not seeing it. Now if you have an actual picture of a 300u with the fool thing mounted on it I might be able to figure it out. By the time I get around to asking on the forum I have already looked at three manuals and done a Google search.

My point was the parts drawing showed the solenoid WITH the starter (rather than somewhere else on the tractor, as was your question), and listed the 2 screws needed to attach it.
You say the screw holes are on TOP of the starter, well it looks like they need yo be at 9:00.

I'd venture to guess the alignment dowel between the "belly" and the drive end of the starter is missing (or there are two holes) and the "rebuilder" assembled the stater 90 "off" with the solenoid mounting area at 12:00 instead of 9:00.

Well, with a big grin on my face and the very best of would be easier to know that if you said something. I got it, the solenoid goes on the starter body. I think the concept that the case is on the starter wrong is the best idea I have heard today. Looking at that now. Thanks, Bob, I wasn't beating up on you!
