1929 John deer gp

I have a gp with engine that locked up last fall. Filled her full of diesel last night to hopefully free up the pistons and when doing so the fuel was dripping out from around the starter crank wheel. Any thoughts?

The John Deere GP question would be better answered on the JD site,but to answer your question,I would like to know where you filled it up.If you filled the crankcase up,it will leak out at the flywheel.There is no oil tight seal there,and it will leak into the primary reduction housing behind the clutch.

You could have an engine full of gas, that would cause a lockup and a leak because the crankcase is also full.

you fill the front of pistons through spark plug holes ... same place water enters and rust forms. takes a lot to fill crankcase and seldom does good.
diesel is pretty useless for that anyhow. try kerosene, or auto trans oil, mystery oil. anything is better than diesel.
don't you cover exhaust pipe?

I filled the crank case. Also will fill through the spark plugs. Just was curious if it was normal to have it leak out around the crank

It's normal if the crank seal is worn out.

There was a reason this tractor was parked. Even if it was in brand new condition when it was parked, time and weather take their toll. Seals dry up and shrink, especially old leather seals which this one probably is.

Yes the exhaust is always covered..As a matter of fact it has been under cover the for the last 30 years and ran yearly every one of them. This year it just so happens to have been the one that she decided to lock up
