Re: Farmall M clutch replacement

I did mine a couple years ago and didn't remove trans yoke, you have to juggle the press plate while pulling the shaft with the disc on it to the side, not much room around the disc to maneuver but it'll come. Doesn't go back in any easier, plan on cussing.

How much time do you actually save by not breaking it down? I have an inner ear problem and can have troubles after working from beneath. I had rather work longer and stand on my feet rather than to lie on my back. I have a good shop with blocks, jacks and a chain hoist. I never tried one from the bottom.

I think it's time for you to consider a set of splitting stands. While you are at the clutch job you can also turn the ring gear and check the rear crankshaft seal when you have the tractor split. I agree with 60 acres, it's much easier to work when stand up on your own two feet. You do know that there are very few people that make money lying on there back.

Well I got it out, guess I'm not used to tractors. If this would have been a 18 wheeler, would have been done already. Ha CharlieU, hopefully you have my stands ready for RPRU this summer. This is what neighbour wants, doesn't mean its always right. He got the wrong disc, splines are smaller. Serial number is F-43459 J, looked it up. 1953 SM with a Rockford clutch. Went case IH parts, he got an IH disc. Not a Rockford disc, anybody run into this?

If your working on a SM it should have a 12" clutch and you need to break it to get the clutch out. If its a M it will have a 11" clutch and it will come out the bottom.

Any 12 inch disc for a SM should go in. Even a 11 inch M would fit the splines.
If you have a 12 inch with the wrong splines maybe its for a SMTA. If its a 11 inch with the wrong splines its hard to say what it may be for.

The disc I took out is 12" & is fiber looking. The new disc from case IH 12" with 4 pads. But the center hub is smaller. Looked clutch disc, the disc I have is for IH clutch. 12" with 11 tooth hub, 1 13/64 of spline. The Rockford clutch is 12", 10 tooth hub, 1 1/2 of spline. Will have to see what local case IH partsman tells me tomorrow.

You have a disc for a SMTA and some other IH tractors. All regular SM tractors before the use of a T/A used the same larger diameter splines. Most suppliers will probably be selling the same disc for a SM now for a Rockford or IH clutch. Probably doesn't have the original clutch in it anyway.
IH did sell # 359168R91 for that tractor then it was replaced by 362103R91.
Tell him to get a plate for a SM below tractor serial # 60001. Someone looked up a plate for above 60000.
This site shows some different types of discs for a SM in tractor parts.

Thanks D Slater, give him serial number. Its 43xxx something, turns out case IH doesn't have replacement disc for the Rockford anymore. He was going to try looking in jobber that he has access to. I would order it from this site, but they will not deal with Canadians. Guess my coloured $ is not good enough. Oh well, again thank for the help guys. Im not new to fixing things with wheels(cars & hi way trucks), but kinda new to tractor fixing.

Was flywheel resurfaced? If so was it stepped correctly? How much adjustment do you have on the clutch adjustment rod? I had about same issue until I adjusted it correctly.

Only thing that was replaced was the clutch disc, that's all he wanted replaced. I said should be replacing from pilot brg to release brg. Which way is the clutch disc hub suppose to face?

I tried the adjusting the rod, didn't make any difference. Isnt there suppose to be tension on the 3 fingers? I took the cover off the bottom of the SW6, there is tension on the fingers against the release brg.

Springs go toward the pressure plate. When you press the clutch in how far is the throwout bearing from plate fingers? The fingers on the pressure plate do wear out. I assume the disc was replaced due to slippage? My SM with all new components in the clutch had to have the clutch rod adjusted to near end of travel to get it set correctly.

Least I have the disc in the right way. I'm thinking that the pressure plate is worn out. As was the clutch disc, was just about to the rivets. But only wanted disc replaced. I was looking around, noticed that there is some thread bolts on each arm of the pressure plate. Read up in the book that there adjustable, but shows doing that on the bench with some sort of tools to compress it. The heads of these bolts are just about worn off. So I'm going to bolt store & find something that is close & hopefully get this tractor out of my hair. Thanks for the help.
