M Power Steering

I went to look at a 1953 stage 2 super m with power steering under the hood type and it has about a half turn of play in the steering wheel i was wondering what the problem could be and if that could be a factory set up being it's a later super m not sure where to check the oil the hoses that go up in there come off the 2 big hoses off the live hydraulic.
Thanks for any help.

Make sure you test the play with the tractor running if it has power steering. Some of the torque multipliers have slop when off.

Its probably an aftermarket char lynn system. There should be a priority valve that taps off the live pump to run it. It uses the fluid in the hydraulic system.

Yours would not be a factory setup - PS was not offered from the factory for the Super M.

Your aftermarket PS - most likely a Charlynn - is supplied by the live hydraulic pump. As long as the level is up in the Liftall tank (hydraulic reservoir) there's plenty of fluid for the PS.

To isolate the source of steering play: Remove the hood. Now start the engine then turn the wheel back and forth while watching the PS torque generator output shaft.

If the output follows the input shaft with no observable slack, problem's in the steering gear/bolster assembly (the most common source of steering play on an SM). Otherwise problem's in the torque generator - most likely a broken centering spring.

Robert was the play in the steering when it is running or when it is not running? If it goes away when it is running it is the way it is supposed to be. If not it is probley worn joints in the steering.
