my 1486 developed a problem in reverse. backing up under slight
load it jumps out of reverse. the lever stays in place but tractor stops. so I push the lever forward like im taking it out of reverse and gears grind. what could be going on? adjustment problem? thanks in advance for any help.

I see no one has responded to your problem. Here is what is going on. The shift collar on reverse is going too far and slides up on the splines of driven gear so far it comes disengaged from driving gear. Usually caused by worn or broken fork, or key way in reverse shift lever shaft. May also be caused by too much end play in the reverse shaft assembly. Some times the washers between the gears break, wear out or wear into the rear housing. One other thing is wrong gasket installed between speed transmission and range transmission allowing shaft to move forward a little. Need to take off side fuel tank to remove side cover to take a look. Then run over that tank so you can't put it back on and save everyone who ever has to do any work on the tractor a lot of headaches.
