560 gas won't start

Hi guys

This problem sounds to me very similiar to the 460 that wouldn't start a little while ago. been working on this 1960 560 and am trying to narrow down the problem. the tractor hasn't ran for a couple years, so here is what i have done. drained the fuel tank and cleaned everything out. took apart the carb and blew threw everything.have cleaned the carb, but did not soak it yet. have new battery, checked spark and have good spark on all 6 plugs. tonight i put some gas in the plug holes and the tractor will run, but only until the gas is all burnt. for some reason it isn't getting gas in the cylinder. didn't know what my next step was. i didn't really want to take the manifold all apart if didn't have to. any ideas would be great.
Thanks

Hold your hand over the throat of the carburetor while a helper makes an attempt to start the engine. Should have good suction. If the suction is weak is an indication of low intake manifold vacuum. Hal
PS: Remove the tube fitting on the carburetor where the gas line connects and look for a screen that may be plugged with crud.

if there is weak suction, what would the next step be. does it just consist of taking the manifold off, cleaning everything and new gaskets, or is there a bigger issue. i have already removed the fitting and the screen is clean now, it was plugged. thanks

first step is compression test, that will tell you if you have enough vacuum to draw the gas from the carburetor. it will also tell you if you have stuck or burnt valves. it will basically tell you the engines condition. you should have around 125 psi pretty much straight across with only 10 percent variation.
make sure you have the main needle valve open , about 4 turns from its seated position and the mixture screw 1 turn.
its also possible you can have a plugged orfice in the carb since it was sitting and you have not soaked it. pull the plug from carb bottom and make sure you have gas flow. it will run.

Like has already been said pull plug from bottom of carburetor if no gas or very little ,the problem may be the float is hanging up or the needel valve is not droping down out of the seat.TAPPING ON TOP OF CARBURETOR WHERE THE LINE ENTERS MAY FREE IT UP.
I have this problem with my 560 int. some times when it sets very long.
Good luck Ralph

The need to take the manifold off is just about 0. If it runs with gas in the plug holes it sounds like a carb/fuel supply problem. Take your breather hose off and see if you can get the tractor to stay running by spraying a little carb cleaner in the carb. If it does, check fuel flow at the line coming into the carb. If you have good flow your problem is in the carb. If not good continuous flow for a little while its in the line from the tank to the carb.

Before you do anything else:

Disconnect the fuel line at the carb and open the fuel shutoff. You NEED that fuel line to run a solid stream of fuel.

That's the first place to check for fuel flow. Sometimes there's rust or crud in the tank that settles over the tank drain and blocks the line from getting any fuel.
