Farmall H Problem

I just bought a Partly restored "H" the engine is so tight that the starter will hardly turn it over. Put in new battery, new points cleaned all cables and had starter rebuilt. The oil pressure shows 75 and drops a little after warm. My question what do You think about dropping the pan and putting some thin shims under the main caps or maybe the rods also? I've never got into anything like to much oil pressure , lots of not enough. Pat. P.

Sounds like a good over haul was done. Maybe with a little run time it will loosen up. May be the time to convert to a 12 volt system for a little more starting power. I sure wouldn't shim the rod and main bearings.

Don't see a problem with the oil pressure. 6 or 12 volt system? What size battery cables? Compression of the engine?

try pulling the spark plugs and spin it over with the starter and see if is still tight, or if it gets easier. if it spins a lot better, check your ignition timing, too much advance can cause hard cranking. timing is set static at tdc with a distributor ignition. bring er up on cyl 1, line up timing mark, 1st one, and set distributor so points are just starting to open. a test light works good for this. if that doesnt help, stop at napa and get some plasti-gauge, drop the pan and measure the bearing clearances. i dont have my book handy to check what the tolerances are, maybe somebody else has them handy.

Can you turn it by hand?

Shimming is out of the question as your H uses insert bearings. You might drop the pan and have someone work the crank back and forth and see if one of the cylinder's bearings/piston is tighter than the rest.

Try cranking with the clutch pushed in to see if you're dragging south of the flywheel.

I WOULD SUGGEST DROP PAN, AND PULL ONE ROD BEARING,SEE IF MAY HAVE PUT AN OVERSIZE INSERT ON A STANDARD CRANK.
