6V battery calbes

I replaced the battery cables on my 6V W-9 with 2/0
welding cable. The starter turns the motor over faster than before. How high should the liquid be in the battery cells? Mine is just covering the plates.
I have had this tractor for over 40 years. I wished I had changed those cables back in the day when it was my main tractor.

the battery gets filled to the rings below the filler caps.
and yes the 6 volts take the thickest cables, if you cant remember #'s they are double the thickness of 12 volt. cables. and will crank over just great without doing a 12 v. conversion.
good job.

Actually the 00 size battery cables are over-kill. Original cables were of #2 gauge, so #1 gauge is a BIG improvement. The #1 gauge is also a lot easier to work with than the #00, as well as being less costly, but if #00 is what you wanted, I won't argue with you.

I had a roll of the welding cable that I purchased
at a auction some time ago so it was kind of
available. It did take some looking to find the ends
that would accept the cable.
Now it looks like the old girl has a rear main seal
leaking badly. I guess I will have to pull the
engine to repair that.

Yes, that is the best & easiest thing to do for a 6V tractor. I have seen several hard starting 6V tractors with small battery cables. I am just going to add a simple explanation here in case others don't quite understand the science behind using larger cables. The larger cables reduce the voltage drop that occurs across the cables during starting, meaning there is more voltage available at the starter terminal. The same voltage drop will occur on 12V tractors too, but since the battery voltage is higher the voltage drop across the cables isn't as noticeable.
