How old is my A - casting codes?

My A has a replacement block, with no serial number in the provided panel (right side, front).
Various books talk about casting codes, but I can't find any. Probably looking in the wrong places. Where's the most likely place?

The seat on my A (no hydraulics) has a s/n of 256461, which is a SuperA number, so it must be a replacement also.
 
All the major castings should have a code on them.I discuss this with you at tommorrows meeting. Steve
 
A friend of mine has a very early B (has Dzus fasteners on the hood, no electrical, and no hole for a starter) that has no casting codes, anywhere.

No casting codes isn't unheard of.
