Carburetor rebuild kits for an H

Hi all,

I've got two questions about the fuel system on my H. My carburetor (50981-DA) is in bad need of a rebuild as it leaks horribly when the valve on the sediment bowl is opened...

Has anyone used the Basic Carburetor Repair Kit from Tractor Supply (SKU 0236813)? I don't think the carb has been serviced in ages, so maybe the full kit would be best? I'm not close to a CaseIH dealership, so online ordering is best. What is a good recommended vendor? How about YT's kit?

Last question, regarding the Rubber hose from the air intake to the carburetor, is this just standard rubber hose that you can buy at any parts store or is it special? What size is it? Looks like 2" or so but I dont have my books yet so I dont know.

I know the old adage about opinions and #$%holes  , but I'm curious to hear what people think.

thanks in advance!

don't know about tractor supply as some of their carb kits seem to have been scraped up from the bottom of the barrell, but yes, the basic kit should get you going. Most likely a worn out needle valve is causing the grief, and that part should be included in the basic kit. The carburetor float might also have issues, in which case it will need to be replaced. The float IS NOT included in any kit, but can be found on-line from a variety of sources.

The "hose" from the air cleaner to the carb should be a steel tube with robber flex couplings at each connection. If you don't have the steel pipe I have an extra around, $1 plus shipping.

I used the Tractor Supply kit on my M carb and it works fine. You may need to buy a new float, my float was pitted in the spot where the needle sits, new float and TSC carb kit, new gasket and it stopped leaking. You can buy that rubber hose at Napa, I think it's 2" radiator hose. ~Anthony

I have done two H carburetors with a full kit from Mark's Carb and Magneto Service of Rice, MN. His kits are of very good quality, and the bowl gasket actually fits (unlike the Tisco kits I have used in the past)! I also replaced the throttle shaft bushing (an extra dollar or two), and they both have worked really well for me. They are not hard to do, but getting every part clean (I used Berryman's carb cleaner to dip all the metal parts in) is critical to having good results. Good Luck!

I appreciate all of the feedback, thanks! I found the size of the Air Cleaner Pipe Hose... I was looking at the parts catalog on CaseIH.com and stumbled across it... For future reference, the part (product # 45251DA) is a 1-3/4" ID x 2-1/4" Long, 8 ply rubber hose.

thanks again!

Note the 8 ply part of that description. It is a heavy gas hose, much heavier than radiator hose. Most people just use radiator hose, either because that is all they can find or they don't know the difference. Radiator hose is OK, but don't expect it to last long compared to the real thing.

Thanks Jim, I had considered that normal radiator hose may not be up to the challenge of a fuel-system. I'll try and find some proper heavy hose.

thanks!

I've got just the regular radiator hose on all of my tractors. Most of it has been in use for 10 years or more. It is still as solid today as it was the day I installed it.

What fuel system? It's for the AIR system.

No fuel should touch the hose.

You are going to pay way too much for a short piece of radiator hose that you can get for a few cents at the local NAPA. For no reason.

Oh and last???

PHOOEY!

A plain old radiator hose will last as long as you need it.

Sure some of those original 8-ply hoses are 50, 60, and 70 years old, but they look like a dead old leathery corpse. New hoses look so much nicer.

a couple years ago i stooped at a tractor supply in peoria il, they had hose kits for the h and m, i think around 12 dollars or so. had all the cooling hoses and the two hoses for the air cleaner, all pre cut. i picked up some extra sets just to have around. check when you are there and see if they have em.
