1206 missing a gear

I'm working on a 1206 I "inherited" It's missing 1st gear I think. I know its common for the nut to come off the shaft, but am wondering where to start. Also, where can I get good manuals for it, like service manuals. I'm a JD guy by nature so bear with me! Any help appreciated.

If this problem just happened and the tractor has not been used much you may be able to get by with doing a split between the center section and rear frame and reinstall a nut. Most likely the center section will have to come out and the front bearing replaced along with possibly the counter shaft and gear. With the nut off the shaft moves forward allowing the rear gear (1rst) to come off the shaft. The splines of the shaft then ride on the front needle bearing and tears it up. If run long enough it can wear through the bearing and damage the casting. I have also had the shaft splines damaged so much the rest of the gears could not come off. You then end up using the fire wrench to take it apart.

You can find IT shop manuals on ebay. If I were you before you start tearing stuff apart,I would drop the bottom cover where the clutch brake is located and you than can easily tell if nut came loose. Maybe if you lucky it is just a shifter problem
