Farmall B - A friend's first tractor

Hey all!

Well, took a break from my current JD A project to stop by a friends and check out his new Farmall B that he picked up on Saturday. Tractor looks to be in not too bad of shape, the mower works (with no screaming bearings), and it goes down the road nice. Brakes and transmission sound good - needs to work on the steering wobble a little but other than that, not a bad first tractor! He plans to use it for yard work at his new house, and I have a feeling he will be getting into the hobby a little more. He is already trying to locate a small loader for it. I thought you all would enjoy!

Wish my B looked and sounded that good! Looks like an excellent first tractor. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

The problem with putting a loader on them is they"re so damn wide. You want a loader tractor"s wheel width to be less than the width of the loader, especially if you"re using it for snow removal. An A is a better choice for a small loader tractor, IMHO.
It"s a nice looking and running tractor, though.

Nice tractor indeed. I think he ended up giving somewhere around $1100 for it. Not too bad at all! Most B's around here people are asking close to 2k or better.

As for me, well. This '41 JD A has been beating me into the ground with every bolt I take out of it. Once this project is back together, when I graduate from school, and when we find our next house (with a MUCH larger shop - I'm working out of a 1-stall townhouse garage now), I'll be looking to get into an A with a belly mower, and would like to chase down grandpa's 1940 M with a loader for snow. Last I heard, the uncle had it parked in the woods near Alexandria, MN. (Haven't heard from him in years).

Oh well, all in good time!

Very nice, I'm always on the hunt for a B, my wife and I saw a B and red power round up that had another seat/platform welded on the other side so the guy could go on tractor rides with his wife and now she wants one!

The B's are great! I have many fond memories of the B. In fact I'm working on my family's B now, having recently bought it from my grandmother. It's in rough shape, but it's a labor of love.

I hope he enjoys it! Just counsel him on pulling loads uphill. That can be a real eye opener! :)

i'd nix the loader idea too. the torque tube is not real strong on that tractor, and you may break her in half. i have a b with a woods 59 under it. great mowing tractor, and nimble as all get out with the narrow front.

You can put a loader on a Farmall B. I have a 1947 Farmall B with a full hydraulic loader thats been on tractor for over 30 years. We have used it for manure, dirt, stone and puhing snow.My loader doesn't hang on beel but is fastened to it. It sets on drawbar and two brakets bolted to front.

How many Bs have you seen broke because of a loader its possible to break anything. Neighbor has broke a coule spindles on his bigger JD says the spindles are junk.

man! i could think of some uses for that around this place, sometimes my loader tractor is just too big to get where i need to get

I'm the friend with the Farmall B. I would like to put a loader on my tractor but I can't find one for sale, which means I need to make one. D beatty, could you get me some more pictures and maybe some rough measurements of your loader? Also curious what kind of hydraulic system to use.? I've been debating on A)running a pump off the pto (but would like to have live hydraulics) B)run a power steering pump off of a cummins (1600 psi and 3.5 gpm) C) replace my perfectly fine engine block with one off of a Farmall C that has the hole in the block for the pump. Thoughts? Comments? Pictures of different set ups?
