grabby clutch

Well I've been getting great reponses, so I'll keep on asking questions.
Just picked up this 400 and she needs little tlc.
Clutch is super grabby. Can't hardly ease into motion at all. Seems pretty stiff also. Hard to push down. TA is bad on low side. Is the clutch bad or just out of adjustment? And if its out of adjustment, could that make TA slip in low side? I should say clutch pedal has to be almost clear up to start moving.

That reminds me of our 966. When I started running it as a kid I was taught to put my right foot under the clutch pedal (and left on top) and use both feet to ease it up. It was that grabby. It always was - last time I used it I still used both feet. That was always what we used to pull start the mixer grinder tractor. You want to talk about nerve racking for a kid. I always had to be the puller.

Does it slip?

Well if it is hard to push down it would not surprise me that it has a clutch pressure plate out of a 706 in it and as for grabby it probably has a buttom clutch and the flywheel was never ground when the clutch was installed . I installed a 706 clutch in a Super M/TA for a buddy after and engine build , OH MY GOD was it ever stiff ,but it does not slip been in there now going on thirty years and it has not gotten any easier to push down . Now as to your T/A problems it is nothing a new T/A will not fix.And you can at that time replace that clutch with a STOCK pressure plate and a woven disc. They push easier .

Back in January I fixed a grabby clutch on an M that turned out to be the throwout bearing sticking on the support. We knew it had been apart at some time because the torque tube was several years different than the rest of the tractor. The support was slightly out of round and the throwout bearing would hang at certain spots. Some careful work with a file and emery cloth got it working properly
