Farmall A battery

My A needs a new battery. It's converted to 12 volt. Will a lawn mower battery do it? I only use it in the summer - no cold weather starts. I have to redo the battery box anyway so I was thinking of using a smaller battery. Maybe the larger CCA of the two rider batteries?

Not really. It might, but the difference between a battery for a 15HP Kohler and an A is about 150 amps on a good day. Far more pieces and Parts (as The Vet would say) to move. Jim

I used a L&G battery in my SA for a week , no problems. I got a used battery that was a good fit for the box before I went to a show. It sure looked better.....

the original 6 volt battery will work circles around that junkie lawn mower 12 volt. like whats the gain/... just makes no sense to me. don't have enough amps to turn the engine over and will heat the starter.

150 Amps? What kind of Super A are you trying to turn over there?

If the tractor starts well, a lawn mower battery is plenty. My problem with them is quality. They just never seem to last long, but I guess you have to expect that when they cost 1/2 as much as the smallest automotive battery.

I have a Group 26 automotive battery on my Cub, which is about the same size as a Group 1 6V battery, the standard on the older Cubs and Super A.

Years ago I used one to start a Plymouth slant 6! Menard just had a good sale on them, 3 different sizes, I am sure the bigger ones would work fine! They are Exide batteries and I get at least 4-5 years out of them.

I think like Earl says you will be okay with the bigger one. If your tractor starts quickly you don't need to worry about over heating.

tuned up, and a engine in good shape,
lawn tractor batteries work just fine.
I buy the cheapest I find, $19.99 175 CCA I think they are.
Have them in lots of tractors, some far bigger than an A.
No problems starting in any weather.
They just won't crank long before running out of juice.
But, in that situation, it's not the battery's fault.
The tractor has other issues if it didn't start.

ps if you're not quite as cheap as me, the highest CCA
one would probably be better.
Lawn tractor batteries are handy too for an easy power disconnect.
A 1/4" bolt with a wingnut to attach the ground cable means
easy on--easy off
