VOLTAGE REG.

How do you polarize the voltage reg .on a 100 to get it to charge, it is a new reg. and how do you check the gen. to see if it is charging.

Voltage regulators are never polarized. THe generator is polarized by jumping across two connections on the VR. The jump goes from the Bat terminal, to the Gen terminal, using a short solid copper wire. This places battery voltage on the field coils causing them to be magnetized correctly for charging. The iron of the fields remains magnetized when this is done. The field terminal on the gen must be in place on the regulator, or grounded, to assure current flow through the field windings. This is done with the engine off. The duration should be about one second of contact. It will spark, so expect that to happen. Jim

If the charging system is working and assuming the battery is basically okay, with the tractor at fast RPM the battery voltage should rise from the normal when setting 12.6 volts up to 13 and near 14 depending on the battery and RPM and system. Also a working properly wired ammeter should reflect the rate of charge which may be from a few up to as high as 20 amps subject to battery and its condition etc.

For complete non charging troubleshooting and how to tell if non charging is the fault of the genny versus the voltage regulator or other things work my Troubleshooting procedure linked below.
