Cub Question

Gotta a question about a cub.
I am limited on budget and I am looking for a tractor to help me make things easier with a garden. The garden is about the size of a basketball court. So I want to plow it (I have been hand tilling it the past couple of years and I am tired of it) I have a horse arena about the same size. I found a cub that has a plow and a belly mower for $2300. I am not going to really use the belly as I have another mower I use all the time.
I have been talking with people and some people tell me it is a great tractor for plowing small gardens and works good.
Others have said it is under powered and I would be disappointed in it.
How does it do breaking up the ground with the plow?
I have never driven one and am searching a lot of different places to educate myself first before I make a purchase of any kind.

That will be fine as thats the reason they sold so many. How will you work the ground after its plowed. You will also need a harrow to smoothout the ground after its been plowed and dried down bes is to plow in the fall as fresh plowed ground does not work up well it needs to "cure" for a time. That will avoid pasking it down. You never work fresh plowed ground.

A Cub is a very capable and nimble little tractor.
The people who say they're underpowered are those
who are expecting to get 20hp worth of work from a
12hp tractor.

However, even a Cub will look big and clumsy when
put into a 5000 sq ft garden. And, it will take
finding the right Cub-specific implements to make
it useful beyond the initial plowing. These
implements are often considered collector's items
and may not be easily found for cheap.
Aftermarket 3-point hitches are available but
would need to be factored into your budget. If
you intend to add a hitch make sure the tractor
has a hydraulic lift; this was optional equipment
on the Cub.

If it were me in the same situation I'd look for
an older IH Cub Cadet or Power King garden tractor
to do the work you're describing. It obviously
wouldn't be quite as good with plowing but, with a
standard Cat 0 three point or sleeve hitch, could
more easily be adapted for other tasks.

Hey, I use an H and a Kubota B3200 to maintain
mine, they're what I have,and it's only 6000 square
feet. It's like a mechanical ballet. A Cub will
dance through your size, give you a great view of
what you're doing in that garden, and oh yeah, you
get to garden ON A CUB!

I own two cubs, a '62 and a '72 low boy. They are great little tractors with limitations. My '62 has a one point hitch which is really useful but hard to find implements for. It also tends to smoke the clutch in hard use such as snow plowing. If you find the right cub, I am sure it will do the job for you.

Our cub is just way to handy for garden work. We
like ours a lot. Easy to work on and lots of parts
and if you watch you can find good used equipment
for it. Think I read some where that the cub out
sold any other model farmalls the company built?
You will not be happy with a lawn mower tractor.

I use my Wards garden tractor for plowing my garden. At one time it was over 6000 sqft. I use my Troy Bilt tiller for breaking up the ground. Hal

You'll be hard pressed to find a better garden tractor then a
cub that is set up right. I have raised more then a few good
gardens an an acre of watermelons with one.

Plow is fine, Cub should handle a 12" bottom which will do a good job in a garden. A set of cultivators would be a good addition. Finding a disc will be a problem. it won't handle more than a 5' tandem disc and they aren't common. You can find a 3 or 4 section drag harrow and remove sections to make a 2 section of it which the Cub should handle. No tractor is any good without implements and that may be a problem for you. There were a lot of Cubs in tobacco country, so you may find more implements there.

So I'm looking for a disk for my cub and posted such the other day. But it got me thinking. You can buy a 4ft 3 point tandem disk from places like TSC/etc. What's the thoughts on fabricating up the parts/etc to make it function as an L-38 disk? Just curious.

Thanks,
