Anyone tell me about the drive options on the IH 544? Was the Hydrostatic drive offered on all model years? Also, did the Hydro version go by a different model number?

Thanks,

Gary

I had a 544 Hydro utility gas, sold it to my brother. Handy tractor, wish I had kept it. Did find a tired Hydro 84 this winter to replace the 544, but had to rebuild the engine. Have a neighbor that has a 544 gas utility, but his is gear drive. Not sure about the years though, never looked them up.

544 comes in gas or diesel engines, with gear or hydro transmissions.

They are all model 544. A hydro will be referred to as a "544 Hydro" unless the seller is absolutely clueless about what they have.

544's are handy, but gutless. They're supposed to replace an M but a good M will run circles around it doing field work. The 544 does have modern things like 3pt hitch, and live PTO, which makes it a much more user friendly tractor.

Looks like the boys got you going in the right direction. I would have to tactfully and respectfully disagree as far as a 544 being gutless unless it has been neglected or has 10,000 hours on it. They (gas engine) are rated at 55 HP on the PTO and a stout 45 HP at the drawbar. No Farmall M is going to get into that neighborhood even with some modest go fast parts added. We have both a fully gone through SMTA and fully gone through 544 on the farm. No question as to what puts more power on the ground...544.

I have a 544 utility gas hydro. I don't consider it gutless at all. Someone told me that the c200 gas engine is an actual 2/3rds chunk of the Farmall 806 gas engine block (C300).
