Have machine that won't roll in cold weather. Have drained trans, got some water out. Warmer weather it still won't roll. What is the deal? COuld the axles be frozen? Different grease? How do I get the deck to stop leaking into the trans?
thanks in advance
ps, I don't use the electric start, if it won't roll start, I don't go

sounds sounds like water dirt sludge but if allthe things the other guys said to do dont work (hope they do!!!) on the M if a rear axle bearing goes bad and one or more of ball drop down in to rear diff. case there is not enough room between the case and bull gear it will lock it up. And if moving fast it can split the case open on mine it punched it out through housing it was small enough of a hole to be welded up after you have tried the other ideas and if they didn`t help. Jack up rear of tractor and try to spin each wheel by hand first cw and then ccw if the wheel turns one way but not the other or if you can hear metal rub or grind it maybe time for the repair manual under axle bearings HOPE NOT this is the only other idea I had other than what the other guys have already said. good luck Tom

Not shure I would build a fire under it, but I might build a sort of tent set up with a tarp and stick a kerosene heater in there. Be careful you don't torch the tarp. My guess is you have an emulshion which has formed ice crystals -- kinda like icecream. I'd drain it and fill it with fresh.

Happens all the time, Loosen rear drain plug, If no grease(heavy oil) comes out she's frozen up. On the tractors I'm gonna use in tne winter I drain the water in the fall. Hope this helps, but could be in two gears.

I have a tractor frozen up right now. I think it is probably water.

Tractors sitting outside will collect a lot of condensation just from breathing between daytime and nighttime temperatures. The amount of water collected depends on humidity, temperatures swings, etc.

IH recommended changing grease twice per year.

Are you sure it isn't still in gear? Pull the shift stick out and look inside to make sure the rails are lined up in the center position, that happens a lot with Farmalls. Water is either condensation or rain. A magnetic block heater and cover should help.

Yes, am sure it is not in gear. If drain water one day and park so that drain plug is at lowest point, why not roll the next day? Surely it can't be getting enough condensation in one winter day to freeze gears. Also, I never use parking brake in cold weather so that's out. Could there be moisture in the axle seals that is part of problem?
thanks all
dave

Hi dick, one way to confirm if it's frooze up is build a small fire under the axles and let it heat for about an hour. That should warm it and let it roll if that is the problem.

Dave:

If you haven't changed the transmission oil for a good long time, what you most likely have towards the bottom of your transmission is an emulsion, which is partly water and partly oil. Emulsions tend to separate slowly, so if you let it sit for a while when it's reasonably warm out, some water will collect at the bottom, which it sound as if you're draining, but you're probably leaving a lot more water behind in the remaining emulsion. It can look anywhere from milky to like light-colored oil. I would expect you'll probably continue to have problems until it either warms up or you change your transmission oil.

I've had problems with my 43 H getting water into the transmission and freezing up. I haven't had a problem with my 43 M. You have to be careful if you have ice - I had ice crack the lower housing one time when I moved the tractor. I've found that just trying to drain the water never gets all of it but I have been able to drain enough to get the tractor to work. If you get it thawed up I'd recommend new oil.
