856 / 1256 interchangeable housings?

I have an 856 farmall w/o 3pt.
I'm interested in trying to convert it to a factory 3pt. I expect it to get a bit pricey, but I am kind of married to this tractor & have no wish to swap tractors. My question is this: Will the transmission cover that contains the vital parts of the hitch fit either tractor? Obviously it would make donors more plentiful.
Thanks for all input. Love the forum!

Yes, it will fit.

The 1256 has a Cat III 3pt hitch vs. the 856 which has a Cat II. I don't know if there is any difference in the upper part of the hitch or not. However, it should bolt on. The only issue may be in transitioning from the Cat III upper part to the Cat II lower.

not sure offhand if a "12" will fit. you might be able to learn something on the caseih parts webpage.
but it should be all the same from a 706, 756, 806, 826, 856.

it also wouldn't surprise me if a 766 and 966 have an interchangeable rear cover.

those are all category 2 tractors, once you get to the next bigger in each series you're into a cat 3.

that being said, does your tractor have the rockshaft with the splines sticking out from tail end of the rear cover? if the shaft is there, or if there are removable plugs to install a shaft, you could probably put all the pieces together on your cover.

either way, if you find a salvage assembly, make sure to take it all apart and replace all o rings and seals. the rear cover being off the tractor is also the time to think about changing the clutch pedal pivot shaft if it is worn.

ND856 yes it will work but you will have to have everything including the torsion shaft and cat 3 arms as well.Keep in mind there is alot more than just the rockshaft cover.Make sure you get a complete cover with the controls on it. The cover you have is just an empty shell just take it off and head to the scrap pile with it.As I said you need the torsion shaft for the bottom, new bushings for the torsion shaft as well as the O-ring retainers.I have done a couple myself. Its alot easier the first time if you have the donor sitting right beside your other tractor if that is not possible try and find everthing in a tractor you can remove yourself that way you can see how it all goes together.
