364 heating

Replaced head gasket on my 364- bd154 diesel. Now, radiator overheats. overflow steams like crazy. No visible reason on water pump to assume that could be bad' Question, could thermostat cause it , how to check that. Can the water pump work, but not be up to the task? Before it was water in the oil, but with the new gasket, I don't see anything but hot radiator.

Hi, yes, stuck thermostat can cause over heating.
Depending on the age of your BD-154 there should be a thermostat bypass.
First I would check that the new head gasket is not leaking into the coolant. When engine is cold, remove rad cap and start engine and let it run until it is warmed up and observe coolant through rad filler watching for air bubbles. Also coolant level should be just above the rad core when cold and 1/2 inch or so below the bottom of filler when warm. After engine warms up and thermostat opens you should be see the hot coolant circulating on the top of the rad.
If you have access to an infrared heat gun, you can check engine block, top to bottom rad temps.
Top should be hot, bottom cool.
Other things to check are:
1)Bottom rad hose for collapsing
2)Clogged rad cores, all the hot coolant stays at the top
3)Air flow through rad
4)Stuck thermostat, can removed and replaced

Caseih.com parts:
3042303R92 is a replacement part for the obsolete part(s) 369322R91, 180F degree thermostat.
I cannot recall if BD-154 uses a standard automotive thermostat or not.

Hey Jim, I think the radiator is bad. Do you know who carries them? I've checked all my online parts dealers, Case/IH even says they don't have them. I know they are EXPENSIVE.
