im new to the farmall group. i just bought a wd9 and i have it so it runs on gas. when i open the throttle on gas it starts smoking but when i release the compression lever it just dies. i have checked and have good diesel flow to the injectors but wont even try to run on diesel. please help

Are you waiting for 2 minutes run time when the temp is in the 40s or 5 minutes when the temps are near freezing and more if needed. If you are, then the compression relief valve rack may be stuck. The third valve in the head must close to allow diesel compression. If stuck open, they will not run on diesel. It might need to have the valve cover pulled to check the third valve operation, If stuck, there will be no external indication. Let us know. Jim

yes have waited atleast 2 minutes or more. i was thinking of pulling the valve cover tomorrow. as soon as i let the lever back i will flat die, so i thought maby a compression issue.

will add also, that it is very easy to tell diesel compression from the gas.
turn it over with the starter on the diesel side and you will know as the engine will crank slow due to extra compression.
and also when operating the compression lever you will hear it "snap" from one to the other.
also if that little 20.00 spring is broken in the shift over mechanism it will stay on the gas side and not switch to diesel. it is right behind the carburetor.

You might also want to check the intake to make sure the butterflies are free and closing completely when you switch to diesel. There is also a spring to help them open and close, it is behind the cover on the front of the intake. Good Luck!

Yes, that spring broke on my MD last fall but my CIH dealer only charged me $16.80. The surprise was that it was still available from CIH. But on my MD that spring latches it on the gas side. I could still start my MD on gas but I had to manually hold lever up until it got warmed up. Al

I agree that it sounds like something is not letting the starting valves close or all 4 are damaged (not likely).

Instead of using the starter to "test" diesel side compression you can also use the hand crank if you have one. Definitely harder to roll the engine over with the crank when it is on the diesel side. With the crank you can easily tell if the starting valves are closing, resulting in good compression on each cylinder.
