Farmall 400 solenoid is magnetized when key is in start position. Will not turn over even jumping solenoid. I"m thinking I have to chase down a short, but I"m by far an expert. Any help is appreciated.

Will the engine turn over by hand?? IF it does not then the bendix is stuck in the ring gear . To un stick with KEY OFF place tractor in fifth gear and rock it back and forth HARD . When you hear a CLUNK OR SNAP it had broken free and try a restart with the key. If this is not the case then the Solenoid has burnt contacts . Sometimes you can cheat a little here as you can remove the cap on the soleniod and turn the two contact around and you can sometimes flip the disc. IF you can not flip the disc then you can clean it up with a fine small flat file . THIS IS NOT A PERMINT fix this is a BANDAID . OR you starter is plum junk and need replaced or rebuilt.

This happened on my 400 recently. I had to loosen all the starter bolts until the starter "popped". It was stuck as Vet suggests.

You can have one of a number of problems.
#1 bad solenoid
#2 start bendex locked up in the flywheel but starter should feel warm maybe hot
#3 bad starter
#4 engine locked up
And there is a good chance there are more

Thanks for the replies. Engine will turn over So I"ll try starter and then solenoid. Anything is possible since it has been sitting in a shed for awhile.

Sitting a while?

It's probably just a corroded connection.

Don't go throwing tons of money at rebuilding starters, new starters, new solenoids... CLEAN THE CONNECTIONS, all of them.
