I have two heads that need to be redone at a machine shop . The shop wants $600.00 to redo them. Is there a demand for these heads?

No demand that I know of.

I suppose if the machine shop is putting all NEW valve seats, valves, valve guides and valve springs plus surfacing it would cost close to $600. But 9 times out of 10 you don't need new valve guides, valves, springs or seats.

I just had the head done for my Super MTA, the guy put all new valves, seats, guides, and resurfaced it and when he gave me the bill he was apoligenic because it cost $299. I didn't complain, and the guy does some of the best head work I've seen. If you don't want to have them done for yourself just put them up for sale as is. If the price is reasonable someone will buy them.

the heads must be in rough shape, as completely rebuilt with all new stuff is expensive but I think he is about 100.00 too high. but at 100.00 an hr. nowadays it adds up. if it was a six cyl. that would be possible. I have spent over 500.00 on the 282 diesel heads.

if you happen to be in central Pa i can replace & grind seats ,knurl or replace guides & grind valves in my home shop for a good price , but cant mag. or mill it yet , i called shop about having a 4 cyl head milled they quoted about $100 for that alone , had 4 pin bushing fit last summer cost $80 for that, heck the bushings only cost $70 & i pressed the new one in myself, prices are getting high , thats why i just started buying up equipment to do my own work couple of side jobs & its payed for itself ( i should note that ive worked for machine shops in the past so i know how to use the equipment too ) when i worked in shop we charged a flat fee for the basic rebuild $195 + parts , meaning no guide or seat replacment , broken bolt removal things like that , but normaly these older engines need seats & should be replaced with harded ones anyway , if your close let me know & ill help ya out if you know your head isnt cracked , working on that magna flux kit next
