Just recently aquired a 52 M Farmall. It has noise in neutral and reverse only. Where do I start?

Is the clunk consistent, or just like random clunking? Mine would do like clunk, clunk, quiet, clunk, quiet, quiet, etc. No set pattern to it. The reverse whine, well, I don't think Ive ever heard any manual transmission that didn't have some whine in reverse, but is this a new thing its doing?

PTO shut off? They set up a whine if it's engaged.

The reverse whine is in my oopinion, normal. the neutral noise could be several things, including the drive coupling in the torque tube, the front shaft bearing, the constant mesh gear, or the intermediate bearing. Jim

Just a wild guess that maybe the main shaft bearing that pilots into the input shaft is just starting to go bad. In neutral the main shaft is not turning and in reverse the main shaft turns opposite of the input shaft. In the other gears the main shaft turns the same direction as the input shaft but at different speeds unless in 5th. maybe turning the same direction is enough to not hear the noise if the bearing isn't completely damaged.

Noise in Neutral can be from a variey od sources. The most important info is what the noise sound like.
Fromt input shaft bearings, Intermediate (pilot shaft) bearing, Counter shaft bearings, and the constant mesh gears are all in motion. When in forward gears (except 5th) there is pressure on the gears/bearings that might cause less noise. reverse is inhearently more noisy than the others as it has an idler to go through as well. Give us a sound. Jim
