Have a guy over-hauling the engine on a Cub and he asked what keeps the crank-shaft pulley on the crank, he said there was no nut or anything on it. I looked at him kind of dumb, and said, the heck if I know. So what does keep it on?

If he has to ask, he might not be the one you want to have overhauling it.

"When finished, do you put it back on with a big hammer?"

You can if you want to damage the main bearings...

To reinstall properly, the end of the crank is threaded with 1/2-20 threads. Install a good length threaded rod and line up the pulley with the keyway. Use a plate with a hole for the threaded rod and pull the pulley on with a nut. Use anti-sieze on the crank and the threaded rod, along with a couple grease covered washers behind the nut to act as a thrust bearing. Some people heat the pulley up before installation, but its not necessary.
