Super M Char Lynn mystery solved, fits 240, now what?

Back in 2012 I bought this Super M with a strange Char Lynn steering motor mounted on the steering post.

Well, I figured out what it fits: My new 240!

According to the parts book, it sure looks like the right one.

Now I have a dilema. Move the power steering over to the 240, or leave it on the M?
 
It's not "strange". Eaton still makes the "torque generators", and there's THOUSANDS of 'em out there!
 
Even though the picture sucks you can clearly see it's not a Behlen unit. It also has the "Char Lynn" logo stamped into one of the end pieces.

This torque generator is different from your normal one.

1. It has a splined shaft for the steering wheel. Normal units have a keyed and cross-drilled shaft.

2. It has a long "nose" on both ends of the body. Normal units only have the nose on one end like this:

I would definitely have to buy the "right" power steering for the M... That's not cheap, and that's why it's a dilemma.
 
If it steers the M well leave it where it is. The Ms have lots of weight over that steering. I'm thankful for my power steering on mine every day.

Loader on a 240 and you will like PS on it. MY 240U has a Char-Lynn TG on it, but it's not the IH factory version, it's like the one you pictured. To install it, the shaft running along the engine has been cut and the TG mounted in that shaft instead of the factory under the dash. Pretty simple installation, but I'll warn you, the pump does not have enough volume to operate both the 3 point or Fast Hitch and steering. With part of the flow tapped off with a priority flow divider valve and the tractor idled below 1/3 to 1/2 throttle the lift won't work. Also will need a separate pump for the loader... same thing, you won't be able to run the loader anywhere near idle. I have often thought of installing the PFDV in the loader circuit as my loader pump is bigger than needed, but what if the loader is ever taken off? I guess I'll never do that, but the next owner might and if he doesn't understand hydraulics he'll have to come here to bug you folks.
BTW, when I worked at Eaton, they made several configurations of the TG... some guys even used them on race cars back in my racing days. I didn't work at the Shawnee plant (been there once) where they made them, but I recall one of our mechanics installing one with a long input shaft on a carloader, and at one time I had a catalog with all the Eaton Hydraulic products... probably got left at work when I retired.

I just did buy a brand new unit like the one in the picture, except mine has an auxiallary port as well as the in and out ports. I don't need the third port, so it will be plugged. The unit will be installed on my M, and it will be under the hood, but it will be a "custom" installation, using a mounting bracket of my own design.
