Baffled over Stanley mufflers

I was in Tractor Supply today, just wandering around looking for something interesting.

I recently bought a 240U and it has a Stanley "IH-3" muffler on it... LOUD! That's because Stanley mufflers don't have baffles.

Looking at the mufflers in TSC, I noticed that the "CA-2" muffler was roughly the same length and had the same inlet and outlet sizes as the IH-3.

I looked up inside the CA-2 muffler, and it has a BAFFLE, and it's actually slightly CHEAPER than the IH-3.

Clearly Stanley can put baffles in their mufflers without increasing cost, so why don't they?

Stanley must be a Case fan or something...

If you want a decent muffler that is not too expensive or loud, buy one from CaseIH. It is also possible that the mufflers that Ken Updike had made to OEM specs and are sold by Carter and Gruenewald, and Steiners will work. Although the one for your 240 is not listed, if the one for the A,B,C, etc has the same diameter inlet, it should be ok. It does not have baffles but is not as loud as the ones you mention. Since Ken left Carter and Gruenewald, I am not sure how long they will last--a couple are already listed as out of stock. Those are the best you can buy anywhere.

Stanley builds mufflers according to OEM specs. If the original specs called for a baffle, then that is how Stanley built it. If the specs called for the muffler to NOT have a baffle, then that is how they build it. The confusion occurs when folks do not look for the correct muffler for their particular tractor. For instance, the correct Stanley muffler for a Farmall H DOES have a baffle, and the muffler for a Farmall M DOES NOT have a baffle, but the M muffler will fit the H and vice-versa.

My 1940 H has a Stanley muffler purchased from a Case-IH dealer. It HAS a baffle, and it IS quieter. It also has a slightly longer barrell than an M muffler, but the over-all length is the same.

The mufflers from IH in the 50's do NOT have baffles, that includes the ABC, H and M. Ken Updike had mufflers made to the original OEM specs, that began sales last year. I have all 3 of them plus an H muffler I bought about 2002 also to IH specs. I also have a muffler from CaseIH for a Super A before Ken had his made, it does not have a baffle. Can aftermarket built ones have a baffle -- yes, IH has a couple of manufacturers, I don't know which is which. But those mufflers are not original. Also the mufflers built before the late 40's-early 50's are not like the ones built in the 50's, baffled or not I don't remember, but I don't think so. As to sound, I am mostly deaf. In the 50's I drove my dad's H, which had a worn out original muffler replaced by the newer one that Ken copied, both of them made me deaf plus other things I was too dumb not to use.

Deafness is more genetic than anything else. I am 63 years old. I grew up driving the old Farmalls. My hearing is still very good.

I still have a new Stanley IH-4 in my parts stash, and just installed the last IH-10 that I had last fall. I bought both probably 10 years ago. The IH-4 is listed for use on the H-SH-300-350 and W-4 tractors, the IH-10 is for H-350's, M-450's, (S)W-4's and (S)W-6(-TA)'s and more. NEITHER of these Stanley mufflers that I posess have any baffles in the center pipe. Each have the center pipe punched in the same fashion. The bodies do have different lengths and outside diameters.

Perhaps they changed their design at some point or they are building something specific for CNH, or maybe something wasn't installed on my muffler at the factory.

My M has a Stanley with no baffle and my 450 has a muffler ( no name) with baffle. I like the sound of the baffled muffler over the non baffled muffler.

When I was 12 years old my dad put me on an H -- at noon and quitting time my ears would be numb. They cleared up in a few minutes and I forgot about it. I am 76, my dad was also partially deaf. If it is hereditary it is either resistance to noise or no resistance to noise. I blame it on the noise, one way or the other. I retired at age 63, I could hear "pretty well", it went downhill from there.

That's odd. All the old IH mufflers we've got laying around the farm have baffles, and they're certainly newer than the 1950's.

Unfortunately, they're for M-size tractors and larger.

Same here, except for one I think is for a 350 Diesel. It doesn't have a full baffle, it looks more like a donut for restriction inside. They're all stamped IH, but what year each was made and who made them for IH, I can't say.

I think Nelson mufflers are still available for some applications. They're quieter and last longer than any Stanley I've used in the same application.

I have a Walker muffler on one H. It sounds different, but it's fairly quiet.

Ken's mufflers "look" good. I have 3 here, and will probably put at least one on sometime this spring. From what I've read, he is entertaining expanding to other models if the response on the current ones offered is positive and there is enough demand for others.

From my experiences, Stanley will be a last resort when no other muffler options are available to me from now on.

Stanley has pretty much been the only game in town up until now for me... The CaseIH dealers around here carry them because they've got a better profit margin. They're all you can order online.

I am a couple months off from wanting a quieter muffler for that 240, and the "restoration quality" muffler is listed for the 240, but I doubt they'll be back in stock by then.

Maybe I'll just suffer with the Stanley muffler I have and a pair of earmuffs. Cost: $0.
