after looking in the I&t shop manual I believe I have a clutch type pto. problem is the output shaft busted off but is still visible and not inside the housing if that make since. could I get away with only pulling off the housing and just replacing the output shaft or will I need to do more than this

If you feel comfortable tackling the basics of a small engine rebuild, you should tackle it (with the Blueribbon Service Manual) If not the issue will be to remove the PTO from the tractor and take it to have it repaired. The last thing a service technition needs is a basket of parts he/she didn't take apart. The Hytran must be drained to a level below the PTO, (or the tractor must be aimed down hill at 30 degrees or so to prevent flooding the ground). Then it should be simple to remove (a manual is needed!! for you and/or the technition that does the work. Jim

You will need to disassemble the whole pto unit to replace the shaft and that is something not to be explained how to do on here.

As I said hard to know till you open it up. Ya you have a fair chance the shaft was broken due to some one not unhooking something or some such but then on the other hand one does not know for sure unless you where the person running it when it happened. I can not say for sure but on a 460 it should be an independent type PTO so the clutch etc is in the PTO housing and what all is broken and such hard to say till you open it up
