IHC 404 #2 Cylinder Missing

IHC 404
Running rough.
Identified #2 cylinder as missing.
Replaced all plugs, wires, distributor and rotor.
(it needed that anyway)
Still Missing.
Compression tests
#1 130 lbs.
#2 118 lbs.
#3 130 lbs.
#4 125 lbs.
Audible clanking in head.
I assume a valve problem.
Next Steps?
Thanks,
Kent

Pull the valve cover. It probably has a broken valve spring. May require the head removed to repair it. Another option is an exhaust valve pushrod off allowing the exhaust to remain closed. It will have compression. Pulling the Valve cover is reality. Jim

Pretty unusual for both rods to be bent. I would just replace them and hope for the best. It would be prudent to pull the plug and look at top of piston.

If the valves were stuck in their guides, the rods are the first items to break in many cases. They can be hammered straight to serve again if not kinked. Use a flat table or piece of glass to make sure they are straight. Make sure the valves move through their full opening before buttoning up the cover. One other thing can cause both to bend.. Ice in the cylinder preventing them from moving. Which is not there now as you are rotating the parts.. Jim

YES they will i would adjust all the valves with a warm engine. With the tappet cover off watch to see iv all valves are working. Now with new wires and plugs and getting engine warm and driving around for a time the bad cycl should get better compression.I had an engine like that and it took a while to get the junk burned out so the cycl worked OK.

From what i have gathered here you have a miss and you have two bent push rods on #2 , i would be looking into #2 real hard as there has to be something in that hole that is causing the valves to hit hard enough to bend the push rods . and if there is noise then there is damage . a bore scope would be nice for a look see , or pull the head if you can handle that kind of work and know what your doing .

Valve Adjust by Jim --- It is simple and fool proof. The process works for all engines with adjustable poppet valves and any number of cylinders. Identifying the valve order is all that is necessary (given in this process for the IH 4 cyl gas). Setting .020 cold is good.
I do it this way others do a different system. It must be set cold first, so setting it twice (or once) is normal Get the specification.
Set the intake valve on cylinder #1 (Front) when its exhaust valve just starts to open.
Set the exhaust when the intake just closes.
These are the two positions that can be seen at the springs and retainers for each cylinder to be as far away from a lobe on the cam as possible while still knowing where it is.
The order is (front to back EI-IE-EI-IE)
Look at #1 valves, Turn the engine till the Exhaust just starts to begin opening (moves) then adjust the Intake valve. Rotate more until the intake just stops moving after having been o

Well, that wasn't hard. Runs good, no obvious reason for the bent rods, must have been ice. Interesting note, the valves had NO lash gap as I found them. Wondering if I should go back and check them all agian after a few hours of running.
Thanks for the help.

Yes, any document that describes adjusting valves also recommends going back and checking them again after some period of run time.
