MD won't stay running on gas

I have a neighbor that is working on a MD - magneto ignition - starter was missing, belted to other tractor. MD would start on gas and then gradually it would slow down to a stop - he has had the manifold off and checked the valves -he has had the carb apart several times -he has good fuel flow from the tank- I have NO experience with a MD specifically the carb -which has a choke butterfly, but no throttle since it runs at a fixed speed on gas? Some guys mentioned timing , or valves open in manifold-- what do you think?

Do not know the MD well but know to old TD-6 which works the same way. Sounds like the carb is running out of fuel. If the carb has a drain plug which I think it should have pull that plug and let the fuel flow for a few minutes. I'll almost bet the flow slows down so when it slows down the engine dies due to lack of fuel Moist likely a float set wrong or a sticking float needle

I agree (past MD owner) the flow into the carb is pretty substantial. It needs fuel. They run rich, it should flow a 1/8" stream for 60 seconds into a clean can. If not the lines, strainers, and sediment bowl to tank passage need to be clean. Jim

If it starts on gas and runs for a time then stops it is either gas or fire how much gas runs out of carb when it stops and how long does the gas flow.

When lever is in gas position, 4 things happen:

Ignition turns on
Valves in manifold direct air through the carb
Decompression valves in cylinder head open to reduce compression for gas operation
Carb float is released to allow gas to flow into carb

Improper adjustment of the switchover system could be your problem. I'd check the manifold butterfly valves.
